The Carrollton-Hollygrove Community Development Corporation (CH-CDC),along with the New Orleans Food and Farm Network (FFN), Tulane City Center have createe the Hollygrove Market & Farm (HM&F), a storefront retail center in Hollygrove offering locally-grown, affordable, fresh produce as well as ‘green jobs’ certification programs in urban agriculture.

The market is at 8301 Olive St, on the former Guillot’s nursery location (across from the ballpark)

Carrollton & Claiborne
The Walgreens is coming up quickly. Roberts must be next!

On the Opposite Corner look for the new construction by Chase Bank.
(The new temporary location is a doublewide trailer at Oleander and Carrollton (near Earhart).

Job Corps
The New Orleans Job Corps on Airline Highway is reopening. Demolition of the
old school is taking place. Stay tuned for more on this.

Churches
The new Mt. Pilgrim BC construction at Joliet and Belfast is moving along.
St. Peter AME has a temporary trailer
Nazareth is holding service in the back of the church while work is being done.
(More church updates as we receive them!)

Residential Construction
Many residents are rebuilding (some with brand new construction!). Help the
progress of the neighborhood. If you have not yet returned, make sure your structure is boarded up and keep the grass cut (cut your neighbor’s too if you can!). Be sure to pick up trash and report any dumping of trash or construction
debris. Let’s make sure our contractors are not contributing to the problem.

A floodwall protection along Monticello (in Hollygrove and Palm Air) has been requested and advocated for many years now. Thanks to Councilman Midura and her staff for their support and assistance.

She & her staff were instrumental in a 2006 meeting with Jefferson and Orleans parish officials at Conrad Playground regarding Jefferson putting in new pipes into that canal and ultimately that pipe was closed. Both Palm Air and Hollygrove have called out the media on more than one occasion to address these same issues.

Just keep in mind, problems with the Monticello canal will not just affect the folks on Monticello. A note to Acorn. Try to work with other groups in the area and coordinate your efforts. It seems we’re all working for the same things. And better communication and notice just might bring better results.

FYI – The Mid-City library branch is scheduled to open in June. This ‘temporary’ location (3 years?), while not in Hollygrove is a bit closer than Willow Street.

According to the MidCity Neigbhorhood Organization…
“There are funds from a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Gulf Coast Libraries Project, administered by Solinet (Southeastern Library Network), to run the library for three years. We have to demonstrate to the New Orleans Public Library that we need a permanent branch by frequently using this facility.

Also, the grant only covers furnishings for a large trailer, so we’re trying to raise $15,000 by the time we open. Most of these furnishings will be for the children’s reading room.
MCNO is seeking donations for these furnishings. It’s tax deductible. Make checks payable to the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization, and mail them to MCNO, PO Box 791023, New Orleans, LA 70179. Be sure to write “Library Fund” in the memo section. “

You can also support a fundraiser “Sultry Sundy Soiree” Sunday May 20 5-8 pm 4301 Iberville. It’s $100 per person. Email Mhoman@xula.edu for more info.

The Neighborhood Info Center is open at Little Zion Baptist Church, 4821 Earhart

The center is open MWF 10-3; Tues, Thurs 3:30-8:30 and on Saturdays 9am -1pm.

Did you miss the Dec 16 meeting (yeah you did, I didn’t see you there).
People, I hate meetings too, but you’d better find a way and some time to attend a few, because you’re going to find your neighborhood changed and you’ll never see it coming.

For you folks that live along Monticello: how do you like the idea of major traffic along that street to Airline. And if you don’t live ON Monticello, but on one of the connecting streets, don’t get smug and think you’re safe - What do you think those motorists will use as their shortcut???? YOUR street. So much for that quiet, safe for the kids to play in front the door neighborhood you moved into, huh?

Alright FYI here’s some upcoming Unified New Orleans Plan (UNOP) activities…

Hollygrove (and minorities in general) has been sparsely represented (the first few times because of last minute notifications by UNOP).

Just remember folks, decisons are being made, with you or without you and if it’s without you, I guarantee it is NOT to your benefit!

Some Hollygrove Neighbors had a gathering in remembrance of HK 05 on Aug 29 at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson.

Two residents Ruth Woods and Wendell Bloodworth were awarded the Hollygrove Neighbors’ Good Neighbor Award for their outstanding work in helping to bring the Neighborhood back.

Ruth and Wendell and a small team of residents have been diligently
working to help improve the look of the neighborhood by picking up trash and
cutting grass. Alex Morgan, and Seung Sun of Councilman Midura’s office
were on hand to present the awards.

The casual gathering was an opportunity for neighbors to come together
in a social enviroment, taking a break form the rebuilding and every day
recovery issues.

Special thanks to the Robinsons, Pam Mercadel who coordinated the
activity, and all those who participated and care about the future of Hollygrove
and its people.

We’d also like to recognize those who have assisted in the Neighborhood
Clean Ups including Patrice Boyd, Beverly Boulet, Barbara Bloodworth,
Kenneth and Lisa on Colapissa St., Ginger Berringer, Shirley Butler, Bobbie Gordon,
Barbara Franklin and her niece.

We are cleaning up Hollygrove, “One Block at a Time!” and we need your
help.

Our last clean up day Saturday August 26, at Hollygrove Street and
Earhart Blvd. was a success thanx to those dedicated residents and
friends and the officers and crew from Sherrif Marlon Gusman’s office, and assistance
from Alex Morgan and Coca-cola.

Our next clean up is scheduled for Sat. Sept 30 at Forshey St. & Cherry St.,
next to Dunbar School

NOTE: If you see someone cleaning up around your home, don’t just peep out, come on out
and help and meet the neighbors who care about you and the neighborhood!
